| The event
is steeped in history. The brotherhood of Iznájar was founded
in May of 1697 and was recognised and approved two years later by
the holder of the diocese of Córdoba, Cardinal Salazar. Toward
the end of the XVI century, the statue of Nuestra Señora
de la Antigua became extremely popular amongst the Iznajeños
(peoples of Iznájar) who went to worship her at the shrine,
at that time located at the bottom of the town, La Vent. The statue
is now known as Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, whose name is
well documented in the XVII century along with the original name
"Nuestra Señora de la Antigua". In the XIX century
the statue became known as Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, however
the original name was preferred by its followers.
The procession attracts hundreds of villagers, not only from Iznajar
but also from the surrounding villages and towns, to join in the
celebration and to follow the shrine carrying large wax candles
on its route around the streets of Iznájar.
Traditionally, those that wished
to repent on this day would carry out their penance by donating
kilo blocks of wax to the church. It is not considered so practical
or reasonable these days - repenters now adhere to more accepted
practices, like placing a sum of money in the collection box or
going to confession.
